WebMadeMovies: We need your story ideas!

Hello, world! This is our first Web Made Movies post. As this is a developer version of the site, we're still working out how to structure the calls for participation - so for now, we're kicking it old school with a videoblog post.

The primary thing Web Made Movies needs to start is good story suggestions. They don't have to be fully formed, but we ARE looking for examples of things that have a real-world manifestation. So:

Can you suggest a person, place or thing that is helping to create an Open Internet? If so, leave it in the comments of this blog, and lets start a conversation.

What do we mean by the Open Internet? This is a useful page that describes the Mozilla Foundation's thinking on what makes a Better Internet.

And please use the comments below to suggest stories that you think we should be following - this project is just getting started, so its a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor. If you have any other suggestions of how we should run Web Made Movies, fire away!

I like this idea. Through my journey on the internet I found this website which is a job search engine. It offers the possibility to search multiple jobs sites in seconds. It compiles jobs from big job sites like Monster, HotJobs, job boards, job newspapers and much more.

a few random "maker / builder" ideas...

Hey Brett! A couple ideas:

I love Emily Pilton from Humanitarian Design. Their idea is to harness the power of design / making / building in ways that benefit real people and make a better world -- instead of just new Doritos packaging and crap no one wants. ;) She was on the Colbert Report recently. Not sure if she's doing anything that's sufficiently "webby" enough for our purposes. But could be worth checking out.

And this guy is another really inspiring maker / builder. He built his own windmill to generate electricy in Malawi. People thought he was totally crazy, but he was incredibly resourceful. He was on the Daily Show recently, and the part that stuck out for me was him describing seeing a computer and the web for the first time.

"I had never seen the internet, it was amazing," he says. "I Googled about windmills and found so much information."

He's on a scholarship to the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa. I'd be curious to know what he's working on next -- and how access to the web is shaping his plans and ideas. He's the kind of super-innovative maker/builder character that could be great. But would need some research to see if there's a sufficient "open web" tie-in.

I've also been reading Cory Doctorow's Makers, which is an interesting exploration of open innovation, hacking / making / building stuff, and what he calls "the New Work." Available for free online.

Local Motors

Thanks, Matt!  Based on some of our discussions (and the idea of following "maker" culture), I met up with the creators of Local Motors (http://www.local-motors.com/) who have built what they call an "open source car".  Its pretty amazing - sort of built the same way open source softwre projects are made, with design challenges, requests for comments, mods, and they release early and often.

I did some filming with their CEO at South By South West and should have some of that edited together shortly, so stay tuned!

Great Web Stories

Here are some story ideas.  I can help you get with the folks making them happen.

- The Extraordinaries: Crowdsourced micro-volunteering on a mobile platform.  Help Kaboom! build a global map of kids' play spaces, make the Smithsonian photo collection more searchable, create a jobs board for young people - 3,4, or 5 minutes at a time, on the go, on your phone.  Now, it would also be awesome for them to talk about how it's a shame that it isn't easier to get their app on phones of all makes and providers...

- LittleSis: An involuntary Facebook of the powerful.

- Ushahidi: A crowdsourced, SMS-enabled emergency response system, built in Kenya, now deployed in Haiti.

- Denver Open Media: Web-powered TV by the people, of the people, for the people.

perfect

Thanks, Nathaniel!  This is exactly the sort of stuff we're looking for :)  I particularly like the Ushahidi example - a perfect case of a project that never would be possible without an open, decentralized Internet.  Sounds like there are some compelling characters that we could film, as well - I'm going to contact these folks and see if there is a way to start an episode.  Thanks, and keep 'em coming!

All my bags are packed

That's amazing !! I' ve scrolled up my sleeves and packed by bags to search for such stories. Although I have been gathered the idea by reading the previous posts about the web based movies, I want to know in details. Do you like to have such real stories in which a corporation or a person is contributing in making the web more open and easier to use for the common people ? What actually you will do after having such stories ? Is any other stories excepting open source internet is acceptable ? I mean to say some remarkable and useful discovery by a commoner for the commoner ? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks a lot :)

Welcome!

Hi, Artitra!

So we're looking for stories about people and projects who are making the web better.  What do we mean by that?  Thanks for asking! :)

When we say a better Internet, this is what we mean:

An internet that is OPEN:
-The Internet works because you can see how its put together, you can improve it if you want, and you don't have to ask anyone's permission to do that

An Internet that is PARTICIPATORY
-The Internet gets better the more people help make it.

An Internet that is DECENTRALIZED

-The Internet works because no one person owns it and no one controls it.

So, if you know of people who are helping to make this happen, or projects that NEVER would happen if the Internet was a closed and centralized system, leave them here.

What will we do with these stories?  Well, we'll see if they are a good fit for a Web Made Movies episode, and then we will either film the episodes ourselves or work with local filmmakers to help them film them themselves - maybe you have a story you want to film?  That would be a good start :)

Thanks!

Want to get involved!

Hey Brett!

Roz here. Just got back from working on the Olympics as a digital producer for CTV, and prior to that worked as a web producer with CBC Radio One's show "The Debaters", and as an online content producer for the MaRS Discovery District, which is a technology innovation centre in Toronto.

I'm getting to be pretty old hat at this web video production stuff, and I'd love to help out! This is a cause that's close to my heart, plus, I love your work. :)

I'm currently based out of Toronto, and am strongly connected with the tech industry here. It wouldn't be hard for me to start sourcing stories and shooting.

You can see some of the work I've done at my website http://www.therozblog.com/ ~ my site itself is in Beta mode but there are some video examples up for my CTVOlympics work as well as samples of a web pilot I just created for the CBC called "Citizen Janes."

I'd love to travel and capture stories for you... let me know how I can help out!

Cheers,

Roz

IT Recruitment Agency

Recruiting is a wide open industry offering a variety of niches for anyone interested in this exciting field. Understanding how full cycle recruiting works will always provide an advantage even if you end up in a position that handles only one facet of the process, like interviewing candidates. Skill sets are transferable however, those who understand the entire placement process have a big advantage and can best control their earnings and career.A personal Internet presence can help when a IT Recruitment Agency  recruiter  Googles you. Not having an Internet presence can definitely hurt you when a recruiter Googles you. That said, it is an unfortunate reality that very few job seekers understand how to approach recruiters effectively.
